Xero Courses in Australia 2026: Free, TAFE and Accredited
Xero's own learning site and certification are free, and its demo company gives you a practice file with fictional data. Paid Xero courses in Australia cost about $209 to $792 as at October 2026, but the ones we checked are short courses, not nationally recognised training. For a recognised qualification, study FNS30322 or FNS40222 through a registered training organisation; units such as FNSACC314 cover computerised accounting.
What you’ll get from this guide: Choose the right Xero course for running your own books or working as a bookkeeper, know what each certificate is worth, and plan the accredited route to BAS agent registration.
- Xero certification (Level 1 to 3 and the Payroll Specialist badge) is free and must be renewed every 12 months.
- Paid Xero short courses we checked cost $209 to $792 in October 2026; none is a nationally recognised qualification.
- Several paid courses advertise access to Xero's advisor certification, which Xero provides free to its partners.
- Recognised training is FNS30322 Certificate III or FNS40222 Certificate IV; their computerised-accounting units are not tied to Xero.
- BAS agent registration needs at least a Certificate IV, a TPB-approved GST/BAS course and 1,000 or 1,400 hours of experience.
- Practise in Xero's free demo company, which resets every 28 days, before touching live books.

What the paid courses add, and what they don't
The paid courses give you a structure, set exercises and someone to ask. Dynamic Web Training and TAFE Queensland run on set dates with a live trainer, which suits people who learn best in a class. Applied Education, The Career Academy and Upskilled are self-paced with tutor support, which suits people fitting study around work.
Three things to know before paying:
- "Certificate in Xero" is a course title, not a qualification. The Career Academy states it is not a registered training organisation and its courses are not nationally recognised. TAFE Queensland labels its Xero course non-accredited.
- "Includes Xero advisor certification" describes something Xero gives its partners for free. Applied Education, The Career Academy and Upskilled all advertise access to Xero's certification. That can still help, because the course guides you through it, but price the course on its own teaching.
- Check GST and access periods. The Career Academy quotes $599 plus GST, while Upskilled quotes the same course's RRP as $599 including GST. Self-paced access ends after 6 or 12 months depending on the provider.
Xero certification explained
Xero's certification is its own product training for people who work with Xero, mainly accountants, bookkeepers and advisers.
| Question | Answer (as at 17 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| What levels are there? | Level 1 Xero associate, Level 2 Xero professional and Level 3 Xero specialist, taken in that order, plus specialist badges. The certifications page lists Payroll and Migration badges; the learning site also lists Tax and Inventory Plus badges |
| Who can get it? | Xero Central says certification is available to all Xero partners. Some education providers include access for their students |
| What does it cost? | Free. Xero says it provides all the learning resources |
| How long does it take? | About 1–2 hours for Level 1 and 4–5 hours for Level 2. Webinar courses are usually two 2-hour sessions. Level 3 time is not stated |
| How is it assessed? | An assessment after self-paced learning or webinars, or assessment only. You need 80% within the time limit |
| What do you get? | A digital badge in your Xero Central profile (usually within 24 hours), a PDF certificate and CPD points if you complete the learning as well as the assessment |
| How long does it last? | 12 months from the day you earn your highest level |
| How do you renew? | Pass the annual recertification assessment for your highest level (80% pass mark, 24-hour wait after a failed first attempt). Level 1, Level 2 and Payroll Specialist recertification are live from July 2026; Level 3 opens from February 2027 |
| What if it lapses? | Recertification alone will not reinstate it. You must complete the full course and assessment again |

A few details matter for bookkeepers. The Payroll Specialist badge is only offered in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand and is built for local payroll rules. Specialist badges need their own short annual recertification separate from your core level. Xero emails reminders about 90, 30 and 2 days before expiry. A practice needs at least one person with active Level 1 certification to join Xero's partner program, and certification lets you appear with badges in Xero's advisor directory.
What should I learn first?
If you are a business owner doing your own books
| Order | Learn | Free source | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Find your way around the demo company and dashboard | Xero learning, "Get started" | You will practise everything else in the demo file |
| 2 | Quotes, invoices, credit notes and online payments | Xero learning, "Sales" | Cash comes in through invoices |
| 3 | Bills, receipts and document capture | Xero learning, "Purchases" | Every expense needs a record before it is paid |
| 4 | Bank reconciliation, bank rules and transfers | Xero learning, "Accounting" | Matching, not re-entering, is where most errors start |
| 5 | GST settings and the activity statement report | Xero learning, "Tax" | You review the figures before your BAS agent lodges |
| 6 | Payroll, Single Touch Payroll and super | Xero learning, "Payroll" | Only once you employ someone |
| 7 | Profit and loss, balance sheet and aged receivables | Xero learning, "Reporting" | To see whether the business is working |
Pair this with our monthly bookkeeping routine for owners and the Xero setup checklist. If payroll is next, read Single Touch Payroll explained before your first pay run.

The accredited pathway: Certificate III, Certificate IV and BAS agent registration
Nationally recognised training is listed on the National Training Register (training.gov.au) and delivered by registered training organisations. The unit descriptions do not name a software product, so providers can teach them using Xero, MYOB or another package.
| Qualification or unit | What it covers | Status (as at 17 October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| FNSACC314 Conduct business activities using a computerised accounting system | Entering invoices, adjustment notes, payments, receipts and bank transactions; producing reports including bank reconciliations | Current, released 15 June 2022; supersedes and is equivalent to FNSACC304 |
| FNSACC426 Set up and operate computerised accounting systems | Setting up and running a computerised system | Core unit in FNS40222 |
| FNS30322 Certificate III in Accounts Administration | 11 units: 7 core (including FNSACC314) and 4 electives, with payroll available as an elective (BSBHRM416) | Current, released 15 June 2022 |
| FNS40222 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping | 13 units: 10 core, including FNSACC426, FNSTPB411 Complete business activity and instalment activity statements and FNSTPB412 Establish and maintain payroll systems, plus 3 electives | Current; release 2 dated 23 September 2022 |
Source: National Training Register, checked 17 October 2026.
FNSACC314's assessment requires you to enter each type of transaction at least three times and to prepare at least three different financial reports. A provider that teaches it in Xero gives you both the unit and Xero practice; ask which software and version they use.
From Certificate IV to registered BAS agent
The Tax Practitioners Board sets the qualification and experience requirements for individual BAS agents under the Tax Agent Services Regulations 2022.
| Route | Primary qualification | Course | Membership | Relevant experience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Item 101 | At least Certificate IV Financial Services in bookkeeping or accounting (or higher) from an RTO or equivalent | Board-approved course in basic GST/BAS taxation principles | Not required | 1,400 hours in the past 4 years |
| Item 102 | At least Certificate IV Financial Services in bookkeeping or accounting | Board-approved GST/BAS course | Voting member of a recognised BAS or tax agent association | 1,000 hours in the past 4 years |
Source: TPB, qualifications and experience for BAS agents (last modified 10 September 2025), checked 17 October 2026.
You must provide evidence such as certificates, transcripts and course outlines. Registered BAS agents also need continuing professional education to renew, and the Board can impose conditions that limit the services you provide. Check that your course includes a Board-approved GST/BAS course before you enrol.
Our guides explain what a BAS agent does, the difference between a BAS agent and a tax agent and how to check a BAS agent's registration.
Xero vs MYOB skills: does one transfer to the other?
The accounting transfers. GST codes, reconciling a bank account, matching a payment to an invoice, accruals and payroll obligations work the same way whichever software you use. The screens and workflows do not.
| Skill area | Xero | MYOB |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Browser and mobile apps | Lite and Pro in a browser; AccountRight has a Windows application plus browser access |
| Free vendor training | Xero learning and free certification | MYOB Academy |
| Practice file | Demo company with fictional data | Separate demonstration file; see our MYOB practice pack |
| Product certification | Levels 1 to 3, annual renewal | Three free MYOB Partner Program certifications (MYOB Business, Business Payroll AU, Practice Compliance) with digital badges |
Learn the product your business, employer or clients use. If you support clients on both, learn one thoroughly first, then learn the second product's differences. Our MYOB training guide covers MYOB courses and includes a small fictional practice pack with check figures, and Xero vs MYOB compares the products themselves.
Free ways to practise Xero
- Xero demo company. Anyone with a Xero login can use it. It has fictional data and almost all features of a real organisation, except automatic bank feeds and inviting other users. You can't send invoices from it. It resets itself every 28 days, you can reset it manually at any time, and you can use "Change Country" to try another country's features, so make sure it is set to Australia.
- Xero's 30-day free trial. Xero's offer terms describe a free trial that ends after 30 days, with limited features. It suits setting up a file the way your business will run.
- Xero learning. Free paths by topic, live sessions and product-update courses.
- Your own fictional file. Never practise in live books, and never connect a real bank account to a practice file.
A 20-minute practice drill in the demo company
The demo company already contains transactions, so check the change in each balance rather than the final figure. All amounts are fictional and assume fully taxable items at 10% GST.
- Note the demo business bank account balance and the GST owing shown on the activity statement report for the current period.
- Create a sales invoice for $550 including GST to a new contact and approve it (you can't send it from the demo company).
- Record a $550 payment against that invoice into the business bank account.
- Enter a supplier bill for $220 including GST and record a $220 payment.
- Check the results: the bank account should have risen by $330 ($550 − $220), GST on sales by $50 and GST on purchases by $20, a net $30 more GST owing. Total revenue should be $500 higher and expenses $200 higher before GST.
- If any figure differs, find the transaction coded to the wrong account or tax rate, fix it, and note what went wrong.
These are arithmetic checks for practice. They are not a BAS calculation, and nothing in the demo company is lodged with the ATO.
Can I claim a Xero course as a tax deduction?
The ATO lists expenses relating to education and technical or professional qualifications among the business expenses an owner can generally claim, alongside software subscriptions. The course must relate to your current business. If you are registered for GST and the provider charges GST, you can generally claim the GST credit and deduct the GST-exclusive amount. Our guide to course and training expenses explains the records to keep, and the Xero pricing guide covers the subscription itself.
Red flags when choosing a Xero course
- The page calls a short course a "qualification" or "diploma" without a national code you can look up on training.gov.au.
- Lessons mention VAT, HMRC or US sales tax rather than GST, BAS and Single Touch Payroll.
- Screenshots show an old Xero layout and the provider can't say when the course was last updated.
- The price is quoted "plus GST" on one page and including GST on another.
- Access expires before you could realistically finish, or extensions cost extra.
- The main selling point is "Xero certification", which Xero provides free to partners.
- There is no named way to ask a trainer a question, or no stated response time.
Key takeaways

Frequently asked questions
Are Xero courses free?
Xero's own training is free. Its certification page says Xero certification is free, its learning site at learning.central.xero.com lists self-paced paths, live webinars and product-update courses, and the demo company lets anyone with a Xero login practise with fictional data. Paid courses from TAFE and private providers cost about $209 to $792 as at October 2026 and add things like a trainer, set exercises or a classroom.
How long does Xero certification take?
Xero Central estimates 1 to 2 hours for Level 1 Xero associate certification and 4 to 5 hours for Level 2 Xero professional certification. Live webinar courses usually run as two 2-hour sessions. You can also skip the learning and sit the assessment only, which needs an 80% pass. Certification lasts 12 months, and the annual recertification assessment takes about 30 minutes for Level 1 and an hour for Level 2.
Is a Xero certificate a nationally recognised qualification?
No. Xero's certifications and the short-course certificates from private providers show product skill, but they are not nationally recognised qualifications. Recognised training is listed on training.gov.au, such as FNS30322 Certificate III in Accounts Administration and FNS40222 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, delivered by a registered training organisation. TAFE Queensland's Xero course, for example, states it is non-accredited and gives a Statement of Participation.
Can a business owner get Xero certified?
Xero Central says certification is available to all Xero partners and is aimed at accountants, bookkeepers and advisers. Some education providers say their courses include access to Xero's advisor certification for students. A business owner who just wants to run their own books does not need certification: the free learning courses and the demo company cover invoicing, bills, bank reconciliation, GST and payroll.
How much does a Xero course cost in Australia?
As at October 2026: Xero's own courses and certification are free; Applied Education's self-paced Xero courses are listed at $245 each (Xero Advanced was $209 for upfront payment until 31 October 2026); Upskilled's Certificate in Xero is $350; The Career Academy lists $599 plus GST; TAFE Queensland charges $500; and Dynamic Web Training's two-day live course is $792 including GST.
Does TAFE offer Xero courses?
Yes. TAFE Queensland runs a non-accredited Xero Accounting short course (code NONAC08006) for $500, on campus at Coomera or by Zoom from Southport, as at October 2026. TAFEs and other registered training organisations also deliver the accredited FNS30322 and FNS40222 qualifications, where you may use Xero or another package for the computerised accounting units. Ask which software the provider uses before enrolling.
Do I need a qualification to work as a Xero bookkeeper?
Many bookkeeping jobs ask for Xero experience or certification rather than a formal qualification. If you want to provide BAS services for a fee, check the Tax Practitioners Board requirements: registration as a BAS agent needs at least a Certificate IV in bookkeeping or accounting, a Board-approved GST/BAS course and 1,400 hours of relevant experience in the past four years, or 1,000 hours with voting membership of a recognised association.
Should I learn Xero or MYOB first?
Learn the software you will actually use: the one your business, employer or clients run. Bookkeeping concepts such as GST codes, bank reconciliation and payroll transfer between products, but menus and workflows do not. If you are training for jobs, check local job ads for the product they name. Both vendors offer free training: Xero's learning site and MYOB Academy.
