MYOB Training in Australia: Free Courses vs Paid Options

The cheapest way to learn MYOB is MYOB Academy, the software maker's own free online training at academy.myob.com, and for most business owners it's all you need. Paid MYOB courses from Australian training providers cost roughly $195 to $395 (more for lifetime-access packages) and earn their keep when you want a structured pathway, tutor support or a certificate to show an employer. This guide compares the free and paid options, sorts out MYOB's confusing 2026 product names so you learn the right version, and gives you a what-to-learn-first order for a business owner versus someone chasing a bookkeeping career.

Start with MYOB Academy (it's free and official)

MYOB Academy is MYOB's learning platform, and it costs nothing. You browse as a guest and sign in with a MYOB account (free to create) when you want to enrol. It's the same login used for MYOB products, but you don't need a paid subscription to use it.

What's there:

  • Product-by-product training for MYOB Business (Lite and Pro), AccountRight, MYOB Business Payroll, Solo by MYOB, and the enterprise products (Acumatica, Exo, PayGlobal, Accountants Enterprise/Office).
  • Four learning types: courses, learning paths (a sequence of courses), live events and short videos, filtered by product, topic and country (AU or NZ).
  • Topics running from setup and implementation through customers, suppliers, employees, finances, projects and accounting and tax.
  • Knowledge checks inside courses so you can test yourself as you go.

MYOB pitches the Academy to four groups: small and medium businesses, enterprise users, accountants and bookkeepers, and tertiary students. Students get an extra deal: MYOB Business free for six months plus a dedicated "Certificate of Achievement for Students" course you can put on a CV.

Where the Academy falls short

Free doesn't mean complete. Know the limits before you rely on it:

  • It teaches MYOB, not bookkeeping. The Academy shows you which button records a supplier bill. It won't teach you why that bill is GST-free, when a payment is BAS excluded, or what a trial balance is telling you. If you don't have those basics, a paid course or the Certificate IV fills the gap.
  • No tutor. There's nobody to ask when your bank reconciliation is out by $47.30.
  • Certificates carry little weight. Only the student pathway advertises a formal Certificate of Achievement. Academy completion won't impress an employer the way a nationally recognised qualification does.
  • It's organised by product. Pick the wrong product and you'll learn screens you'll never see. That's why the next section matters.

Pick the right MYOB product before you pick a course

MYOB has renamed its range more than once, and plenty of courses (and YouTube videos) still teach retired versions. MYOB Essentials was folded into MYOB Business a few years ago; AccountRight survives as the top two tiers of MYOB Business. Here's the current line-up and standard pricing shown on MYOB's pricing page (as at September 2026, before introductory discounts):

Product Who it's for Standard price Payroll
Solo by MYOB Sole traders, phone-only $99 a year None
MYOB Business Lite Micro businesses, browser-based $315 a year (about $26 a month) on the annual plan, or $35 a month billed monthly $3 per employee per month, up to 2 employees
MYOB Business Pro Small businesses with staff $70 a month $3 per employee per month, unlimited employees
MYOB Business AccountRight Plus Inventory, jobs, bigger payrolls; desktop and browser $165 a month Unlimited, included
MYOB Business AccountRight Premier Multi-currency, multiple businesses Priced above Plus; MYOB doesn't show a standard price on its main pricing page, so ask for a quote Unlimited, included

A Payroll Only plan is $15 a month. MYOB advertises steep introductory discounts (Pro at $21 a month for six months, for example) and reviews its prices periodically, so budget on the full price. MYOB's pricing page doesn't make the GST treatment of every plan obvious, so check whether GST is included before you commit.

Why this matters for training: Lite and Pro share one browser interface, so a "MYOB Business" course covers both. AccountRight has a different (desktop-style) interface with inventory, jobs and multi-currency features, so it needs its own course. If a course is labelled "AccountRight v19" or is built on the old MYOB Essentials product, it's teaching software that's been retired for new customers. Read the outline rather than the title, though: Applied Education still markets its current MYOB Business Lite and Pro course under the old "MYOB Essentials" name.

Get a practice file. Pro and AccountRight Plus come with a 14-day free trial, which is enough to work through a course with real screens. Applied Education and EzyLearn include practice data and exercises; Udemy courses generally point you to MYOB's demo company.

Paid MYOB courses: prices and what you get

All figures are as at September 2026 and taken from the providers' own pages. None of these short courses is a nationally recognised qualification; they issue certificates of completion.

Provider What you get Price Access Certificate
Applied Education (RTO 52240) Online self-paced certificate courses: MYOB Business accounting, MYOB payroll, MYOB bookkeeping (AccountRight), advanced MYOB. Perth classroom workshops (1–2 days) too $195 per certificate course; $395 for the five-course MYOB Masterclass bundle; Xero and MYOB bundles up to 57% off a $937 RRP 12 months Certificate of completion; 5–12 CPD hours listed per course
EzyLearn Video-based AccountRight and MYOB Business courses: setup, daily transactions, bank rec, GST/BAS, payroll; workbooks and assessments $349 for all five AccountRight Plus courses with 12 months' access; lifetime-access and combined MYOB-and-Xero packages cost more (prices on its enrolment page); payment plans from $20 a week 12 months or lifetime depending on package Certificate of completion; 30-day money-back guarantee
The Career Academy MYOB Advanced Certificate, Xero and MYOB package, payroll bundles Not published on aggregator listings; request a quote Varies Non-accredited certificate
Udemy A few hours of video per course, mostly AccountRight, several made overseas; ratings vary widely Typically a few tens of dollars on Udemy's near-permanent sales (list prices are much higher) Lifetime Udemy completion certificate; 30-day refund
TAFE (state by state) Non-accredited MYOB short courses and skill sets in some states, and the accredited Certificate IV (see below) Varies by state and subsidy; check your state TAFE Course dates Statement of attainment (accredited units) or attendance certificate

Applied Education says most students finish a course in six to twelve hours. EzyLearn's course outline gives a useful sense of where the time goes across a full MYOB syllabus: about 5 hours on setup, 12 on daily transactions, 3 on bank reconciliation, 5 on GST, BAS and reporting, 8 on payroll and 2 on job tracking, roughly 35 hours all up.

When paying beats free

Pay for a course when at least one of these is true:

  1. You need a pathway, not a library. The Academy is a shelf of videos. A paid course walks you from an empty company file to a finished BAS in order, with exercises that build on each other.
  2. You want a certificate for job hunting. A completion certificate from an Australian provider is a small but real signal on a CV for entry-level bookkeeping or accounts roles. The bigger signal is a Certificate IV.
  3. You want someone to ask. Applied Education and EzyLearn both advertise tutor support for enrolled students. That's worth $200 the first time you're stuck at 9pm.
  4. Payroll is your job. Payroll is where mistakes cost real money (underpayments, super, Single Touch Payroll). Paid courses go deeper on it than the free videos.

Stick with the free Academy when you're a business owner doing your own books on Lite or Pro, you already understand basic bookkeeping, or you're testing whether MYOB is even the right software before you commit.

Avoid these traps

  • Retired versions. Check the course outline for "MYOB Business" (Lite and Pro) or the current AccountRight; skip anything built on the old Essentials product or retired desktop versions. Don't judge by the title alone, since at least one current course still carries the Essentials name.
  • Overseas courses selling as "certificates". Some Udemy titles say "Certificate in MYOB AccountRight Premier"; it's a Udemy completion badge, not a qualification.
  • Paying for what's free. If a course is mostly screen recordings of standard features, the Academy already has that at $0.

The accredited path: Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping (FNS40222)

If you want to work as a bookkeeper, the qualification that matters is the FNS40222 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, offered by TAFEs and private RTOs nationally. It covers preparing and lodging activity statements, data processing, monthly reconciliations, budgets, financial reports and end-of-year adjustments, and it's delivered using industry software, which in practice means MYOB, Xero or both.

The Certificate IV is also the entry ticket to registering as a BAS agent. The Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) requires:

  • a Certificate IV or higher in bookkeeping or accounting;
  • a Board-approved course in basic GST/BAS taxation principles (usually built into the Certificate IV); and
  • 1,400 hours of relevant experience in the past four years, or 1,000 hours if you're a voting member of a recognised BAS or tax agent association.

Anyone charging a fee for BAS services without registration is breaking the law, so software skill alone doesn't make you a BAS agent. Our guide to what a BAS agent is explains what they can and can't do for a business.

What to learn first if you're a business owner

Learn MYOB in the order you'll actually use it. Each step takes an evening or two on the Academy; a paid course covers the same ground with exercises.

  1. Setup. Business details, financial year, GST registration and reporting basis (cash or accruals), chart of accounts, opening balances, bank feeds. Get this right or everything downstream is wrong.
  2. Daily transactions. Quotes and invoices, supplier bills, receipts, customer payments. Install the MYOB Assist app so you can photograph receipts and invoice from your phone.
  3. Bank reconciliation. Matching bank feed lines to transactions, creating bank rules, chasing the odd unmatched item weekly rather than quarterly.
  4. GST and BAS. Tax codes (GST, GST-free, BAS excluded, input taxed), the GST reports MYOB produces, and how the numbers flow to the BAS labels. The software fills in the form; you still need to know why a code is right.
  5. Payroll. Employee setup, pay runs, leave, superannuation, Single Touch Payroll finalisation. If you have staff, this module isn't optional.
  6. Reports. Profit and loss, balance sheet, aged receivables and payables. Read them monthly, not at tax time.

Two to three weekends covers steps one to four for a service business with no stock or staff. Add another for payroll.

What to learn first if you want a bookkeeping career

The order flips: get the credential, then the software, then the specialisation.

  1. Enrol in the Certificate IV (FNS40222). It's the qualification employers filter on and the TPB requires.
  2. Learn Xero and MYOB, not one. On the day we checked (2 September 2026), Jora listed 1,064 "Xero bookkeeper" jobs in Australia against 704 for "MYOB bookkeeper", and a large share of ads ask for either or both. Xero reported about 2.1 million Australian customers at 31 March 2026 in its FY26 results (up from 1.77 million two years earlier); MYOB is privately owned and doesn't publish a comparable figure, but it's still the system of record at many established businesses, especially those with inventory, jobs or bigger payrolls. Knowing only one platform shrinks your job pool.
  3. Go deep on payroll. Payroll competence is what separates a $30-an-hour data-entry role from a payroll officer or senior bookkeeper role. Payday super (super due with each pay from 1 July 2026) and Single Touch Payroll make this more valuable, not less.
  4. Collect the software certificates. Applied Education, EzyLearn and MYOB's own Academy pathways are cheap CV lines once the Certificate IV is done. Xero has a similar free certification program.
  5. Log your hours. Track relevant experience from day one so BAS agent registration is a paperwork exercise, not a scramble.

What is MYOB's AI assistant called?

There isn't one. MYOB has spread its AI features across several named products, which is why the search results are confusing. As at September 2026:

  • MYOB Assist is a mobile app, launched in September 2025 and included at no extra cost with every MYOB Business (Lite and Pro) and AccountRight subscription. It uses AI-powered receipt capture (pulling the total, GST and date from a photo) and suggests categories based on your past coding. It's an admin app, not a chatbot.
  • AI BAS is the headline feature from MYOB's March 2026 AI announcement. It suggests how transactions should be treated for GST, flags anomalies and produces a pre-filled BAS report for you or your BAS agent to review. It doesn't lodge with the ATO for you. MYOB said the features were rolling out progressively in beta; its pricing page now lists AI BAS (beta) as an additional purchase on Lite and Pro, so check the current cost.
  • AI Business Insights, Smart Reconciliation and Smart Invoice Reminders came in the same March 2026 release, rolling out progressively across Solo, Lite, Pro and AccountRight.
  • An in-product AI assistant lets you ask plain-language questions about your own business data inside MYOB. MYOB hasn't given it a consumer brand name. From August 2026, MYOB began a phased rollout of integrations that surface the same data (balances, overdue invoices, profit and loss) inside Claude and ChatGPT.
  • MOCA is MYOB's Online Chat Assistant, the support chatbot that answers help questions. It's a customer-service tool, not part of your books.
  • MYOB Acumatica (the enterprise ERP) has its own AI Assistant for predictive text and autocomplete, and an AI Advisor for anomaly detection and forecasting, introduced in its spring 2025 release, with an AI Studio for building agents added in April 2026.

What this means for training: none of the paid courses covers these features in depth yet, because they're new and changing. Learn the fundamentals (tax codes, reconciliation, payroll) first; the AI features suggest and pre-fill, but a human still has to know whether the suggestion is right. For a broader look at AI in small business admin, see our guide to AI assistants for small business.

Should you learn MYOB at all?

If your business or employer runs MYOB, yes, and the Academy makes it free. If you're choosing software from scratch, don't let the training question decide it. Compare features and price first, whether you're weighing MYOB against Xero, QuickBooks or Reckon. Every major platform has free official training, so the learning curve is roughly the same whichever you pick.

Business owners who'd rather build a working set of finance habits alongside the software can also work through the free lessons in our Academy.

Key takeaways

  • MYOB Academy is free, official and covers every current MYOB product; sign up with a free MYOB account and start there.
  • Learn the right version: MYOB Business (Lite and Pro) shares one interface; AccountRight Plus and Premier are different and need their own course. Skip anything teaching MYOB Essentials.
  • Paid Australian courses cost about $195 per course or $349–$395 for a full bundle (as at September 2026); they're worth it for structure, tutor support and a completion certificate. Udemy courses sell for a few tens of dollars but are often overseas-made or dated.
  • Business owners: learn setup, daily transactions, bank reconciliation, then BAS and payroll, in that order.
  • Career-changers: do the Certificate IV (FNS40222), learn Xero and MYOB, and go deep on payroll. Xero shows up in more job ads, but plenty ask for both.
  • MYOB has no single-named AI assistant: MYOB Assist is the app, AI BAS the BAS tool, MOCA the support bot, and Acumatica has its own AI Assistant and AI Advisor.

Where to get help

  • MYOB Academy for the free official courses, learning paths and live events.
  • MYOB pricing for current plan prices and the 14-day trial.
  • Tax Practitioners Board for BAS agent qualification and experience requirements.
  • training.gov.au for the FNS40222 Certificate IV and the RTOs that deliver it.
  • Your accountant or BAS agent can tell you which MYOB plan and tax settings suit your business before you spend time learning the wrong one.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free MYOB accounting course online?

Yes. MYOB Academy (academy.myob.com) is MYOB's own free online training, with courses, learning paths and videos for MYOB Business, AccountRight, payroll and Solo. You need a free MYOB account to enrol, and nobody checks whether you're a paying customer.

How much does a MYOB course cost?

Nothing if you use MYOB Academy. Paid online MYOB courses from Australian providers run from about $195 for a single certificate course to $349–$395 for a full bundle with 12 months' access (EzyLearn also sells lifetime-access options at a higher price), and Udemy sells MYOB courses for a few tens of dollars on its rolling discounts (as at September 2026).

What is MYOB's AI assistant called?

MYOB doesn't have one single-named assistant. The app is MYOB Assist (free with Lite, Pro and AccountRight), the BAS tool is AI BAS, and the support chatbot is MOCA (MYOB's Online Chat Assistant). MYOB Acumatica, its enterprise product, has a separate AI Assistant and AI Advisor.

Should I learn MYOB or Xero to become a bookkeeper?

Both. Xero appears in more Australian bookkeeping job ads than MYOB, but a large share of ads ask for either or both, so a career-changer who only knows one is filtering themselves out of work. Learn the one your target employers use first, then add the other.

Do I need a MYOB course to work as a MYOB bookkeeper?

No course is legally required to use MYOB or do bookkeeping for an employer. To charge clients for BAS services, though, you must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board, which needs at least a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping plus 1,400 hours of relevant experience (1,000 if you're a voting member of a recognised association).
