Xero vs Reckon One: Cost, Payroll and Bookkeeping Compared

Reckon One can offer a lower starting accounting subscription than Xero. The useful question is whether the saving remains after you include payroll, required features and the support your business needs.

The differences to check

Requirement Xero Reckon One
Standard pricing Ignite $37; Grow $78; Comprehensive $107; Ultimate 10 $143/month. AUD, GST included; standard prices. Accounting Plus $24/month; Premium $46/month standard prices. Payroll is additional.
Access Cloud browser software with mobile apps. Cloud browser software. Reckon Accounts and Reckon Accounts Hosted are separate products.
Payroll Included employee allowances vary by plan: 1, 2, 5 and 10 respectively. Check extra headcount costs. Separate payroll tiers: Essentials up to 4 employees, Plus up to 10, Premium unlimited.
Main caution Ignite has invoice and bill limits. Foreign-currency accounting starts at Comprehensive. Older articles describe superseded module pricing. Use the current named plan.

Product information checked 9 September 2026 against Xero's official information and Reckon One's official information. Features and prices are plan-dependent; these are documented-feature comparisons, not scored lab tests.

Compare today's plans, not an old modular price list

Reckon One's current accounting plans differ from the module-by-module descriptions still found in older reviews. Write the exact plan name on the quote. Do the same for Xero and include its invoice, bill and employee limits where relevant.

If you need a connected sales app, ask that app's provider to confirm both integrations and demonstrate a refund. A logo in an app directory does not establish that every transaction or correction is supported.

Be precise about BAS

Both products support Australian GST record keeping, but our evidence distinguishes Xero's BAS lodgement features from Reckon One's BAS reporting. Confirm the actual submission route for the selected Reckon setup.

That difference may be unimportant if an adviser prepares and lodges everything. It can matter if the owner expects to complete the whole process inside one subscription. In either case, obtain the lodgement evidence; a generated report is not the receipt.

Measure the weekly work

Give each trial the same ten or twenty representative transactions: customer receipts, supplier payments, a transfer and a refund. Record how many items need investigation and whether you can trace the final bank balance.

There is no defensible universal claim that one feed is more accurate for every Australian bank. Test your institution and account type. If one system saves a little subscription money but adds a recurring manual job, put a realistic value on that job before deciding.

Make the decision with a repeatable trial

Use the trial worksheet to record completed tasks, missing capabilities and recurring manual work. Put subscriptions, add-ons and setup into the cost calculator on the same billing and tax basis.

Key takeaways

  • Compare the named plan and complete setup, including payroll and integrations.
  • Test an ordinary transaction and a correction before committing.
  • Confirm that your adviser can use the resulting records and reports.
