MYOB Business Lite vs Pro: Plans, Limits and How It Works
MYOB Business Lite and Pro handle bookkeeping in a web browser. Lite is the smaller option; Pro becomes relevant when bank accounts, employees or operating needs outgrow it. They are separate from the Windows AccountRight application.
Instructions headed simply “MYOB” may show a screen your subscription doesn't have. Check the product name before following them.
Lite or Pro: start with the limits
| Question | Lite | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Standard price to check | $35/month or $315/year | $70/month |
| Connected bank accounts | Up to two | More than two supported |
| Employees | Up to two | More than two supported |
| Payroll charge | $3 per employee/month | $3 per employee/month |
| Main interface | Browser | Browser |
Prices were checked on 9 September 2026. Monthly promotions and annual commitments are different offers; confirm GST treatment and the total payable at checkout. The source of truth is the named Lite or Pro plan.
Count accounts carefully. Your transaction account, business credit card and savings account may already put you beyond Lite's connected-account allowance. A sole trader can still have several accounts.
Follow one invoice all the way through
Enter the customer, agreed service, amount, due date and applicable tax treatment. Check the invoice before sending it. When the customer pays, use the bank transaction to match the invoice payment rather than recording another sale.
Now test a less tidy case: the customer pays half, or pays two invoices together. Check that you can explain the remaining customer balance. This is a better test of suitability than producing a polished sample invoice.
On the spending side, distinguish an unpaid supplier bill from a purchase already paid. Keep the supporting document attached or retrievable. If you first enter the bill and later create a fresh expense from its bank payment, you can count the same cost twice.
What to check for payroll and BAS
MYOB Business includes Australian GST and BAS functionality. It still needs correct organisation settings, transaction coding and reviewed figures. Generating a statement, lodging it and paying an amount due are separate jobs.
Before enabling payroll, agree who will check employee details, opening balances and reporting settings. Do not test a payroll lodgement with invented employee details. A walkthrough with sample data should establish the process without sending anything to the ATO.
The MYOB bookkeeping checklist covers the regular review work after setup. If your question is who should perform that review, read how to hire a bookkeeper or BAS agent.
Stock and jobs: ask for a demonstration
An item list isn't evidence that a product handles your whole inventory process. Bring a small example: buy ten items, receive six, sell two and return one. Ask to see the remaining purchase order, quantity on hand and value in the accounts.
Similarly, job tracking needs a clear purpose. Do you want to group costs against a job, bill time, or compare each project's budget with actual results? Show the exact report you need. Check any inventory add-on or higher-product requirement before accepting the quote.
If those tasks lead you towards the Windows product, use MYOB Business vs AccountRight. Moving between them is a product decision, not just changing the colour of the interface.
A useful first-week trial
Create a small test customer and supplier list. Work through a quote, invoice, part payment, bill and bank reconciliation. Then ask the person who will maintain the books to do the same jobs without following your notes.
Where do they hesitate? Can they find an unpaid invoice? Can they trace a reported expense? Those observations tell you what training is required.
Use the side-by-side comparison tool if you are also considering Xero, QuickBooks or Reckon. Compare complete monthly costs, including employee charges, instead of comparing the discounted subscription headlines.
Key takeaways
- Identify Lite, Pro or AccountRight before following MYOB instructions.
- Count bank accounts and employees when checking Lite's limits.
- Demonstrate stock and job requirements instead of assuming the feature name covers them.
